1212 Enrolment work progressing well in most provinces

Enrolment work nationwide is progressing well in almost all the provinces except for five provinces that have yet to start their field work. The small maritime province of Manus has become the first province to complete its enrolment work and has sent the completed data to PNGEC headquarters in Port Moresby. The next phase of roll update is the display of the preliminary rolls for public scrutiny which is the objection period.

“For provinces like Manus that have completed their field work and data entry can send in their data to Port Moresby to have their preliminary rolls printed so that they can go into the next phase which is roll display and objection.”

“As Commissioner, I’m satisfied with the progress of roll update so far and remain confident that the finalized printed rolls will be ready by the end of March next year,” Gamato said.

He said provinces that have yet to conduct training for their Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers and enrolment agents include West Sepik, Madang, Enga, Southern Highlands and three electorates of Central province – only Rigo district completed field work and data entry whilst Abau, Kairuku-Hiri and Goilala have yet to conduct field work.

Mr. Gamato said West Sepik and Madang are the only two province that have been facing problems in accessing their funds to start enrolment work and the Commission is doing all it can to resolve the issue.

He said Southern Highlands has outstanding issues that have yet to be resolved including the election manager’s position saga which is still before the court resulting in the province not being able to conduct training for its Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officers and enrolment agents to start field work.

Mr. Gamato said Enga has completed training for its Returning Officers, Assistant Returning Officer and enrolment agents for Kandep, Wapenamanda and Wabag except for Lagaip-Pogera district.

The Electoral Commissioner outlines the progress in other provinces as follows:

  • Field work continuing – Bougainville, NCD, Gulf and Eastern Highlands
  • Field work completed and preparing for data entry – New Ireland, Western, Northern, Milne Bay, Morobe, West New Britain, Hela, Jiwaka, Western Highlands and Chimbu
  • Data entry in progress – East New Britain and East Sepik
  • Data entry completed & data sent to Port Moresby - Manus

“In summary, 16 provinces are progressing well with their enrolment work, one completed its enrolment work while five provinces should start their field work in the coming weeks,” Gamato said.
