China donates 133 Foton vehicles for election use
The Government of the People’s Republic of China has donated a total of 133 Chinese made Foton vehicles to Papua New Guinea and PNG Electoral Commission to assist with transportation in the 2017 National Election. Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato said that it was a very kind and generous donation from the people and Government of China.
In thanking the Chinese Government for the vehicles
He said seven technicians from China have arrived to inspect the cars last Friday (March 31, 2017) and will ensure that the vehicles are mechanically fit and proper before they are officially handed over to the PNG Electoral Commission.
The 133 Foton vehicles are 2.8 litre diesel engine, 4 door dual cab, 4x4, 5 seat capacity (or 15-20 people in PNG) air condition, 5 speed manual.
“This is a great assistance to PNG Electoral Commission.”
“We will share the vehicles with other agencies of government who will be directly involved in the 2017 National Election such as PNG Royal Constabulary, PNG Defence Force, DNP&M and Correctional Services.”
Mr. Gamato said that all the 22 provincial provincial electoral offices will be given two vehicles each.
He said that urban areas like Port Moresby, Lae, Kokopo, Mt Hagen, Goroko, Madang, Wewak and Milne Bay will be given extra vehicles so that they do not hire land cruisers or five door land cruisers.
He added that land cruisers can be hired and used in remote or rural electorates.
“I want to see that we reduce the cost of hiring vehicles during election period,” Commissioner Gamato said.
