0202 Gamato outlines major events for 2018

Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says the three major events for the 2018 calendar year include the conduct of the Local-Level Government elections, review of electoral boundaries and launching of PNGEC’s corporate plan for 2018-2022.

Mr. Gamato said that the 2018 LLG elections will be held from July to September and urged his staff nationwide to remain focused on delivering the elections.

A total of K100 million has appropriated for conduct of the 2018 LLG elections which is K50 million more than in the 2013 LLG polls.

“It’s a reduced budget from the 2017 National Election budget of K279 million and we (PNGEC) need to tighten our belts and operate within the limits of the budget allocated to deliver the LLG elections.”

In his address to headquarters staff this morning (Friday, 02 February, 2018) at PNGEC’s 2018 dedication service Mr. Gamato said that the second major event for the year is the conduct of the electoral boundaries review.

“Two things that needed to be looked at prior to boundaries review are the terms of reference and the legal framework.”

“This is because previous boundaries commission reports had all been rejected by Parliament.”

“Therefore, this time we will get Parliament to approve the legal framework to remove the veto powers of Parliament and have an independent statutory body of commissioners to approve boundaries reports.”

Commissioner Gamato said that the third major event is the launching of PNGEC’s 2018-2022 Corporate Plan.

“Within the 2018-2022 Corporate Plan, we (PNGEC) will push for restructure so that we can have a stronger organization to effectively and efficiently deliver elections in PNG.”

Mr. Gamato also acknowledged and thanks PNGEC’s international partners like the electoral commissions of Australia and New Zealand, Australian Civilian Corps, International Foundation of Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Australian Defence Force for their invaluable assistance in the conduct of the 2017 National Election.

Meanwhile, the 2017 National Election Report to Parliament has already been produced by PNGEC and has been submitted to the Chief Secretary and the National Executive Council for the Prime Minister to table in Parliament.
