2002 Report on 2017 National Election for Parliament completed

A comprehensive report for Parliament on the 2017 National Election has been completed by the PNG Electoral Commission and is out now.

Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato confirmed that copies of the report have been delivered to the Chief Secretary to Government Ambassador Isaac Lupari and the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

He said that a brief presentation on the report was made to members of the Inter-Departmental Election Committee (IDEC) a fortnight ago at its first meeting for 2018 at the PNGEC head office in Port Moresby.

“PNGEC is now preparing the report to be presented to the National Executive Council (NEC) before it is tabled in Parliament.”

“The report basically highlights key issues and challenges, amendments to election laws and the way forward to improving the electoral system in PNG.

“Part of the improvement (of the electoral system) that PNGEC is proposing to the National Government is for the use of technology to assist in voter registration, voter identification and counting of ballots.”

He said that once the report is tabled in Parliament, copy of the report will be posted on PNGEC website (www.pngec.gov.pg) for the public to access online.
