1406 Election Materials for South Bougainville By-election Arrive

Election materials and ballot papers for the South Bougainville by-election have arrived in Buin last week and will be distributed this week in preparation for polling which starts on Saturday 18 June 2016. Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato confirmed that the PNGEC chartered fixed wing aircraft arrived at Aropa airport in Arawa with the election materials and ballot papers last Friday (10 June 2016).

0806 Government to Release PNGEC Funds for Roll Update

The National Government will make the first allocation of up to K10 million to the PNG Electoral Commission to start updating the Electoral Roll nationwide in the coming months. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill told Parliament this week that some funding have already been cleared through the Central Agencies Coordinating Committee (CACC). PNGEC had requested for K192 million for the Roll Update exercise.

0306 12 Nominate to Contest South Bougainville By-election

A total of 12 candidates have nominated to contest the South Bougainville Open by-election when nominations closed at 4pm yesterday (Thu 2 June 2016). The all male field of candidates have various backgrounds and educational qualifications which include engineering, accounting, media, military and teaching. Runner-up in the 2012 national elections and journalist Timothy Masiu is running again for South Bougainville seat.

Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says so far five candidates have nominated to contest the South Bougainville by-election. He said nominations have been coming in very slowly since the writ was issued last Thursday (26 May 2016) but he believes intending candidates are weighing their chances of winning before they nominate.

2805 12 Months Anniversary Rule and By-elections

By law, the PNG Electoral Commission must conduct by-elections to fill vacancies in the National Parliament and Local-level Governments that fall due before 27 July 2016, says Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato. Any vacancies that occur after 27 July 2016 cannot be filled. This, he said, is to comply with the 12 months anniversary rule as per section 106(a) of the Constitution on by-elections.

2805 Hela Provincial Seat By-election to be Conducted

PNG Electoral Commission is obliged by law to plan, prepare and conduct a by-election for the now vacant Hela Provincial seat following the death of the governor, the late Anderson Agiru, early this month. Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato says PNGEC is obliged under section 106 of the Constitution and section 74 of the Organic Law on National Elections (OLNE) to plan and conduct a by-election for Hela.
