Govt not interfering with PNGEC, says Prime Minister
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill says the Government does not interfere in the work of the Electoral Commission. He said this yesterday (October 25, 2016) when asked by Rabaul MP Dr. Allan Marat about the updating of the electoral roll and whether it was true that the appointment of returning officers was done by Cabinet. O'Neill told Parliament the Government is only giving all the support the Electoral Commission needed.
Enrolment Field Work Status Report
This is an update report on the status of the Electoral Roll Update Program in all the 22 provinces in terms of the implementation of their activities in preparation for the updating of their respective Provincial Rolls in the next four months. The Electoral Roll Update Program activities immediately commenced after the training of all Election Managers and Assistant Election Managers in August this year (2016) in Lae.
Two Kandep Ballot Boxes Missing after Break-in
Two ballot boxes belonging to two other candidates in the 2012 National Elections from the recent Supreme Court ordered judicial recount of the Kandep seat in Enga have gone missing following a break-in last Wednesday (October 19, 2016). Police in Wabag confirmed the incident and have vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the motive and persons involved.
Status Report: Electoral Roll field work in the provinces
Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato has expressed satisfaction that electoral roll update field work is gradually gaining momentum in a number of provinces throughout the country. Mr. Gamato said some of the provinces that are well ahead of the others include East New Britain, East Sepik, West New Britain, Milne Bay and Central.
NBC moves to assist PNGEC in election coverage for 2017
Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato has welcomed a proposal offered by the National Broadcasting Corporation, for PNGEC to utilize the new NBC’s revamped network to assist with coverage of the 2017 elections. Mr. Gamato, however, said that PNGEC is currently weighing its options against associated costs from communication stakeholders NBC and Digicel Group Limited.
Branch Updates on Enrolment Preparations as at October 3, 2016
Three enrolment pilot projects are currently in progress in three provinces – Kokopo district electorate in East New Britain, Alotau district in Milne Bay and Rigo district in Central Province – with elector data entry ongoing in the districts. Data Processing Officers (DPOs) have already been trained and are now doing data entry. Materials for the Roll Update exercise have already been dispatched last week.
