Heads of Missions meet with the PNG Electoral Commission to discuss preparations for the 2017 National and LLG Elections. The meeting was the first of its kind where all High Commissioners, Ambassadors and Representatives were all present at one time to show their support to the PNG Electoral Commission and their preparations for 2017.
Dion Issues Writs for LLG By-elections in Central Province
Minister for Inter-Government Relations and Deputy Prime Minister Sir Leo Dion today issued LLG by-election writs for three more vacancies that have occurred in Rigo district, Central province. Nominations have opened at 4pm this afternoon and intending candidates can register their nominations with the Returning Officer Kila Egaba at the Central Electoral Office in Boroko.
Transparency Key Principle for Credible Elections
Transparency is a key principle for credible elections in PNG, Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato told participants of the 10th Annual Sir Antony Siaguru Walk Against Corruption at the Jack Pidik Park at five mile in Port Moresby this morning after the conclusion of the walk. The 4.3 kilometers walk covered the Boroko area only but there was overwhelming support.
Lupari Launches New-look PNGEC Website and Roll Look-up
Eligible voters throughout Papua New Guinea will now be able to look-up their enrolment details on the electronic Electoral Roll Look-up page on the new-look PNG Electoral Commission’s website unlike before – the first of its kind for the Commission and PNG. The website and electronic Roll Look-up were officially launched by the Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari.
Election Materials for South Bougainville By-election Arrive
Election materials and ballot papers for the South Bougainville by-election have arrived in Buin last week and will be distributed this week in preparation for polling which starts on Saturday 18 June 2016. Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato confirmed that the PNGEC chartered fixed wing aircraft arrived at Aropa airport in Arawa with the election materials and ballot papers last Friday (10 June 2016).
Government to Release PNGEC Funds for Roll Update
The National Government will make the first allocation of up to K10 million to the PNG Electoral Commission to start updating the Electoral Roll nationwide in the coming months. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill told Parliament this week that some funding have already been cleared through the Central Agencies Coordinating Committee (CACC). PNGEC had requested for K192 million for the Roll Update exercise.
